BOONSBORO — Behind a superb pitching performance by Logan Saunders, South Mountain shut out Hancock 10-0 in an opening-round matchup in the Maryland District 1 11-12 Little League Tournament.

“Logan’s control was on all night,” said South Mountain manager John Saunders. “His curveball was working along with his changeup, and his high fastball set up his off-speed stuff.”

Logan Saunders was a model of efficiency, pitching a two-hitter with four strikeouts in five innings on only 45 pitches.

“He threw strikes all night. That’s all we asked him to do. And his defense was behind him all night,” John Saunders said. “Perfect games are few and far between so I tell my defense to just stay focused. Baseball is a game of short memory. I couldn’t have asked for a better defensive game.”

Brett Duft kick-started South Mountain’s offense with a two-run home run to left center in the bottom of the second inning. South Mountain added a run on a passed ball in the third and another on a wild pitch in the fourth to stretch the lead to 4-0.

“Duft set the tone for the game,” said John Saunders. “That was the start and the cushion that we needed.”

South Mountain scored six runs in the fifth inning to put the game away. Smith and Zach Crampton each hit RBI singles to highlight the inning.

“We just have to come back with a strong defense and keep the bats on the balls. Tonight just wasn’t our night,” said Hancock manager Randy Golden. “(Logan) had a well-pitched ballgame. We saved some of our pitchers so we’ll have plenty of pitching left. We just have to get back after it on Saturday.”

South Mountain will host Halfway on Friday at 6 p.m. in the winners’ bracket quarterfinals. Hancock will host the Conococheague/Valley loser Saturday at 5 p.m. in the losers’ bracket.
