Meritus Health, Suns team up for distracted driving campaign

Meritus Health is sponsoring its “Stay Alive! Don’t Text and Drive” public awareness campaign this week at Hagerstown Suns games.

The event will run through Sunday at Municipal Stadium.

Schedule of events:

  • Today — Neon sunglasses for fans who sign the pledge. Game time: 7:05 p.m.
  • Friday — Bumper stickers and bracelets given away. Chances to win lottery tickets. Game time: 7:05 p.m.
  • Saturday — T-shirts will be given away to the first 1,000 fans who sign the pledge. Game time: 7:05 p.m. 
  • Sunday  — Bumper stickers and bracelets for fans. Lottery ticket giveaway. Game time: 1:05 p.m.

Along with community partners, Meritus Health’s trauma and emergency services department organized the “Stay Alive! Don’t Text and Drive” public awareness campaign primarily targeting teenagers, who, in Maryland, account for 11 percent of all driver fatalities.

Nationally, teen drivers are more likely than any other age group to be involved in a fatal crash that occurs as a result of distracted driving.

A texting simulator will be on site each night, along with the Maryland State Police seatbelt convincer.
