SMITHSBURG — Mayor Mildred “Mickey” Myers Tuesday night swore in Jim Fritsch and Heath Abbott as new Smithsburg Town Council members, then said: “Now the work begins.”

Fritsch and Abbott each won four-year terms on the five-member council in the May 8 town election.

Incumbent Councilman Donnie Souders was also re-elected and was sworn in earlier, Myers said.

Myers welcomed a few guests to a “very, very special session” of the town council, then swore in Fritsch, who runs First Financial Group, a Hagerstown business that specializes in insurance and investment services.

“I hope you enjoy it. We’ll ask you in a year from now how things are going,” said Myers, drawing some laughs from the spectators.

Fritsch said after being sworn in that he was looking forward to the job and felt privileged to be elected to office.

Several of Abbott’s family members came to the meeting to watch him being sworn it.

Abbott, a project manager for Building Systems Inc., a general contracting business in Hagerstown, said he appreciated the confidence that voters had in him.

Souders was the only candidate who had filed to run in the election by the April 2 filing deadline.

Disappointed over low interest in the election, town officials learned they could hold a special town meeting to find more candidates.

The meeting was held on April 23, and four more people, including Abbott and Fritsch, were nominated to run for three open council seats.
