Suns pull away in late innings to fly the coop on Shorebirds

SALISBURY, Md. — The Hagerstown Suns took the lead in the third inning and pulled away from the Delmarva Shorebirds in the final two innings for a 9-3 victory in Tuesday night’s South Atlantic League game.

Leading 4-3 after seven innings, the Suns (46-29, 4-2) put the game away with a two-run eighth and a three-run ninth.

Facing Shorebirds reliever Zach Petersime in the eighth, Bryce Ortega led off with a double to left and Cole Leonida beat out what was supposed to be a sacrifice bunt. Billy Burns’ RBI single scored Ortega, and Cutter Dykstra’s two-out RBI single scored Leonida.

Hagerstown made it 9-3 in the ninth off Matthew Bischoff. Justin Miller had an RBI double, Ortega hit an RBI single and Miller scored on a double play.

Delmarva (28-46, 0-5) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Hagerstown starter Kylin Turnbull (3-4). Glynn Davis led off with a double to left, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Jason Esposito’s groundout to short.

The Suns (46-29, 4-2) grabbed a 3-1 lead in the third against Shorebirds pitcher Matt Taylor (2-5). With one out, Burns walked and Brian Goodwin singled before a wild pitch moved the runners up. Dykstra hit a two-run single to right, stole second, went to third on Caleb Ramsey’s groundout and scored on Matthew Skole’s two-out single to center.

Hagerstown made it 4-1 in the fourth. Miller led off with a single, Leonida and Burns hit one-out singles to load the bases and Miller scored on Goodwin’s sacrifice fly.

Delmarva cut the lead to 4-3 in the sixth. Mychal Givens led off with a double to left. Turnbull retired the next two hitters, but walked Brenden Webb. Wynston Sawyer’s two-run double to left ended Turnbull’s night.
