Mail Call - June 25

June 24, 2012

“I think it’s fine that Hagerstown, Washington County, has these events and goings-on on the weekends; say, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Saturday and Sunday. Now, that might raise some money, some interest in the area for a short while, for a couple of days at the most, but what our city and county leaders need to understand is, we need something Monday through Friday, as in businesses and incoming money to those businesses. Big or small, that’s what we need. Special events are fine, but we need something consistent, to help this area.”

“This is to the caller from Leitersburg that is insinuating in Mail Call that school health employees make almost $40 an hour. My friend is a school health assistant. She makes between $11 and $12 an hour. She cares for three small diabetics, has an average of 30 health office visits a day for other medical reasons and gives several medications. The BOE needs to look at these ladies, because this is a bargain.”

“You know, I was reading Mail Call on Monday morning, the 18th, and I can’t believe some of these people’s reactions to this health care situation for these kids in school. This one guy wants the kids to pay for it, right away. He doesn’t want the school board to have anything to do with it, but he wants the kids to pay, parents to pay for it. You know, it’s getting ridiculous when people don’t even think ... down in their hearts about kids. And I’m willing to pay a little more tax to get these kids the health care they need.”

“I just want to know what’s wrong with this county. First they take the recycling bins out of Maugansville, two weeks earlier than they stated. So for the people who do recycle properly, now those are gone, two weeks earlier. And then to top it all off, for those of us who pay an outrageous fee to go to the dump, already have fees tacked onto us to dump items like grass, now they want to charge to recycle. Really? I can’t believe it. I thought that recycling ... the county doesn’t even want you to do that, without charging you a fee. Well, I guess people won’t recycle anymore because the county’s getting a little greedy.”
— Maugansville

“I hope the city and the county keep looking at the paper, at the mass exodus from downtown Hagerstown. The latest is Carol & Co., left, and the one place, the eatery up on Franklin and North Potomac’s talking about leaving and selling, and now Ben’s florist, to Long Meadow. At least Long Meadow’s gaining, but you’re worried about the stadium, how about the small businesses? Wake up and smell the roses.”
— Leitersburg

“I’m calling in about the Smithsburg caller who says that getting rid of the nurses is, sounds like President Obama’s health care. Give me a break. When do the county commissioners have anything to do with President Obama’s health care?”
— Falling Waters, W.Va.

“I agree with the Mail Caller who said routine medical care should be paid for by the parents or the guardian of the child, and disagree with the grandchild who needs four shots a day, five to six times a week, provided by someone. That’s routine care; should be provided by the guardian. They should pay for the nurse’s services.”
— Washington County

“Everyone agrees we need a senior center, but it should be located in a convenient location, not at busy Robinwood. The success of the center at Girls Inc. point this out. Long Meadow, with ample parking and businesses, would be perfect. The only convenience at Robinwood would be if you had a heart attack. Use your heads and save us millions.”
