Dimitri Wolford, a senior at St. Maria Goretti High School, is the winner of the 47th annual E. Russell Hicks-Louis E. Tuckerman American History Award, which is given each year by the Hagerstown Civil War Round Table.

Dimitri, son of Tim Wolford and Maria Pellico, received a certificate and $1,500 scholarship at the Round Table’s May 24 meeting at Hagerstown Hotel and Convention Center.

Dimitri’s social studies teacher, Genie Massey, received a plaque from Terry Baker, president of the Washington County Commissioners.

The round table presents a scholarship to an outstanding student of American history from among high school seniors in Washington County.

The round table also supports battlefield and historic preservation, provides books to the Washington County Free Library’s Western Maryland Room and educates the public about the Civil War through its meetings.

Six county high schools participated in this year’s scholarship program.

Dimitri’s essay was chosen by a selection committee.
He will attend the University of Maryland, and plans a career in politics and public service.
