Motorcycle Mass to be held Saturday

June 21, 2012

LAPPANS — The Episcopal Motorcycle Ministry will hold a Motorcycle Mass Saturday at 6 p.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Lappans Road.

The newly-formed ministry, titled “Taking the Church Out on the Road,” invites all motorcycle enthusiasts, family members and the public to a Saturday Motorcycle Mass at 6 p.m.

The informal outdoor service (in case of rain, it will be held indoors), includes readings from scripture, a short sermon, prayers and Holy Communion.

The Rev. Steve McCarty, vicar of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Clear Spring, is the organizer and will preside at the service. It is a cooperative outreach between McCarty and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.

Restrooms are available in the St. Mark’s Fellowship Center.

Over the summer, there will be four Saturday Motorcycle Masses scheduled at St. Mark’s at 6 p.m.

They will be June 23, July 14, Aug. 18 and Sept. 15.

At each service, a free-will offering will be taken to be given to a local charity, and those who attend will be invited to go after the service to a local fast-food restaurant.

On Saturday, the offering benefits CASA and the group is invited to go to Chick-fil-A on Wesel Boulevard near Valley Mall.

McCarty, who owns and rides a Harley, welcomes all who may feel that their way of life or style is not accepted by their religious community or who have no religious affiliation but want a way to  worship.

All are welcome; attendees do not have to have a motorcycle.
