Washington County Family Center gets grant for literacy program

June 20, 2012

The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy has awarded $50,000 to the Washington County Family Center in Hagerstown to support the Literacy for Life Program for parents with young children who attend the center.

The center is one of five Maryland recipients selected in the 2012 state grant competition. Grants already have been awarded to family literacy programs in more than a dozen states nationwide.

The center is sponsored locally by the Washington County Department of Social Services.

The grant will support education and literacy activities for parents and young children through a unified family literacy model. The program supports parents in obtaining their high school diploma while also mastering basic literacy skills through integration of early childhood programs, parenting education and family literacy.

Programs will focus on helping parents without a high school diploma to increase their education by more than one grade level per year, and prepare the prekindergarten children of these parents to be more prepared to enter school on par with their peers.
