First day of summer

June 20, 2012|Linda Murray | Around West Hagerstown

Today is the first day of summer.

It’s time for swimming, picnics and catching lightning bugs. I hope you are enjoying this time as much as I am.

Ridge Avenue reunion planned

A reunion will be held for people who grew up in the Ridge Avenue area of Hagerstown on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Ridge Avenue playground.

It will offer a chance for picnics, to reminisce about “old times” and see how much “older” everyone looks.

Those who attend should plan to gather around noon and begin cleanup and departure around 6 p.m.

There will be room for pop-up canopies, tables, lawn chairs, food, etc. on a family-by-family basis.

Youth Meritorious Award

Congratulations to Bailey Covington, an eighth-grade student at Western Heights Middle School for receiving the Youth Meritorious Award for 2012.

Bailey has been on the honor roll and distinguished honor roll multiple times and is a member of the National Junior Honor Society. As part of the honor society, she has participated in Step “N” Stride breast cancer walk and the Turkey Trot.

Bailey also plays percussion in the school band and is a member of Tri M, the music honor society.

Outside of school, Bailey is involved with her soccer team and church. Through her church she has worked with Habitat for Humanity, Soles for Souls, Operation Christmas Child and many other worthy causes.

Bailey is highly respected at school by students and staff alike.
