WAYNESBORO, Pa. — A Waynesboro man was pronounced dead following a two-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon that closed Pa. 16 in Washington Township, Pa, for hours.

Township police said a 2009 Honda sport utility vehicle traveling east crossed the center line and struck a silver 2004 Chevrolet sport utility vehicle at about 3 p.m.

The two vehicles stopped moving near Stoneham’s Motorsports, which is west of Waynesboro.

The driver of the Honda, Matthew B. Lamer Jr., of 728 Golden Spring Drive, Waynesboro, was taken to Waynesboro Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said in a news release Wednesday.

The driver of the Chevrolet, Darl L. Helfrick, of 11498 Hades Church Road, Greencastle, Pa., was taken first to Waynesboro Hospital and then was flown to Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center, the release said.

The crash closed the road between Waynesboro and Zullinger, Pa., for several hours.

Investigators were taking measurements from the vehicles to a spot close to Tick Ridge Road. An assistant coroner was on the scene.

The same area was the site of a fatal crash on June 6.

Claude Wickers, 83, of 201 Fairview Ave. was driving a red 1998 Volkswagen Cabrio involved in that three-vehicle accident. Wickers died in the crash.
