Hagerstown City Council OKs contract for Broadfording Road upgrades

June 19, 2012

The Hagerstown City Council Tuesday night approved a contract with a city construction company for improvements on Broadfording Road to make way for additional developments in the area.

By a 3-1 vote, the five-member council awarded the $1.7 million contract to Craig Paving Inc. and approved a memorandum of understanding that stipulates the developers would help pay for the project.

Councilwoman Ashley Haywood, who said she does not support more big-box stores in the city, voted against both motions.

Funding for the road-widening project that would connect Hollyhock Road and Md. 58 will come from $616,934 provided by Washington County and the rest from the developers. No city money will be used for the work.

“The MOU will need to be signed by all parties submitting the funding before we release this contract,” Councilman Martin Brubaker said.
