Cloid “C.R.” Russell Smith Jr. died peacefully at Homewood at Williamsport, Md., Wednesday, June 13, 2012. C.R. is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty B. Smith of Williamsport; son, Dr. C. Russell Smith III (Carolyn) of Charleston, W.Va.; daughters, Corinne Smith-Plattner (Peter) of Henderson, Nev., and Patricia Smith Rutledge (John) of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and four grandchildren, James Smith, Ashley Plattner, and Kyle and Rebecca Rutledge.

C.R. was born in Washington, D.C., Nov. 28, 1924, to Cloid R. Smith Sr. and Ethel T. Smith.

He and Betty were 1943 graduates of Roosevelt High School in Washington, D.C. As a child, he spent many memorable summers with his relatives in Remington and Culpeper, Va.

C.R. served as a seagoing Marine in World War II, as a field musician. He played in the Redskin Band and was a member of the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps, and had a 42-year airline career with Pacific Coastal Airlines, and Capitol and United Airlines. He worked in the Baltimore, Washington and Hampton Roads, Va., areas.

His hobbies included travel, golf, entertaining, visiting family, volunteering, gardening and being active in his community. After retirement, he and wife Betty moved to New Port Richey, Fla., before coming to Williamsport in 2004. He was a fantastic storyteller and had quite a following. He was a current member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, the Retired United Airlines Employees Association and the Marine Corps League of Hagerstown, Md.

There will be a memorial service at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 10813 Donelson Drive, Williamsport, MD 21795, Saturday, June 23, 2012, at 11 a.m.

Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium, with date to be determined. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, address above; to Marine Corps League of Hagerstown, 18810 Rolling Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742; or to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
