Kathleen Virginia (Smith) Newcomer, 96, of Benevola, Md., passed peacefully from this life, Sunday, June 17, 2012, at Somerford House Assisted Living in Hagerstown.

Born June 12, 1916, in Mapleville, Md., she was the daughter of the late Harry Mumma Smith and Sadie Estelle Cline, and stepdaughter of J. William Stine.

Kathleen was a 1935 graduate of Boonsboro High School, where she worked as a secretary for three years after graduation.

On Nov. 23, 1938, she was married to Richard H. Newcomer, and they lived on and farmed the Newcomer family farm at Benevola. Richard preceded her in death on Feb. 28, 2005, after 66 years of marriage.

Kathleen was a lifelong member of Benevola United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and played the piano and the organ for many years.

She also was a member of the Antietam Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, the Washington County Farm Bureau, the Washington County Historical Society, the Boonsboro Historical Society and the Washington County Rural Heritage Museum.

She is survived by her daughter, Ruann Newcomer George and husband, Jack, of Benevola; seven nieces; and seven nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Kathleen was preceded in death by three sisters, Irene Mozingo, Dorothy Smith and Frances Gearhart; an infant brother, George Smith; a brother, Leroy Smith; and a stepbrother, Preston Stine.

A funeral ceremony will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 22, 2012, at Benevola United Methodist Church, 19925 Benevola Church Road, Boonsboro. The Rev. John H. Dean will officiate. Burial will follow in the adjoining church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, June 21, 2012, at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The family also will receive friends one hour before the service at the church Friday.
