Fireworks and pets not a good mixture

Even though summer is just getting under way, it’s not too early to think about how Fourth of July celebrations can be unsettling to pets.

The Humane Society of Washington County reminds pet owners to be aware of the ways they can keep their pets safe.

While fireworks can be exciting and fun, they can be terrifying to pets. Make sure pets are inside and kept safe. Fences can be jumped and frantic pets can harm themselves while panicked in an unsafe room.

The shelter urges pet owners to make sure their pets’ identification tags are updated. Make sure to have a recent photo on hand in case of the unthinkable. It’s never a good idea to take your pet while watching fireworks; they can get frightened and lost. A reminder also is to never leave a pet in the car while running errands. The temperature can escalate quickly and be very dangerous.

For more information, call the shelter at 301-733-2060.
