Mail Call - June 18

June 17, 2012

“The GOP is right. They want to take the country back to the ’50s, where the women don’t have any say in their own health care.”
— Hagerstown

“I live in Potomac Towers, and we do not want the new ball stadium in our front yard.”
— Hagerstown

“Did I misunderstand the Central Office maintenance article? The roof leaks during heavy rains, and people are smelling mold or mildew, a potential health hazard, yet there are no plans for even a temporary fix or any action at all, to at least keep the problems from getting worse. But they’re repainting offices and planning to replace carpets? What’s going on here? Repaint before fixing a leaky roof? Common sense in fiscal spending dictates any available money be used to fix the roof first. Otherwise previous repairs may be ruined, and money spent on them wasted.”
— Frederick, Md.

“I hope Washington County Board of Commissioners and Washington County have enough money for the first time that one child dies from the lack of having a nurse at the school. Those parents are going to own Washington County. And don’t say it’s not going to happen. I think this county gets more and more and more and more ridiculous every day, when you just think it can’t get any more ridiculous. To pull nurses out of a school and to take and put a child at risk.”
— Smithsburg

“I’m calling to the person from Sharpsburg who was upset about the candy throwing at the Sharpsburg Memorial Day parade. Are you kidding me? The kids love to get that little piece of candy, and the teams and the ones that throw them, they love to do that, to see the kids’ faces light up. Were you not ever a kid before? Tell me how that’s disrespecting our fallen heroes. I think they would be smiling down, too, saying, yeah, way to go. Wake up there, Sharpsburg caller.”
— Boonsboro

“This is in reference to the nurses layoff. A lot of issues, but I wholeheartedly agree with Earl Stoner, what he said, wasn’t a knee-jerk reaction, he had to do something. It was fair to the health department, county commissioners, and the employees that’s terminated. But if you look at the cost, it looks like if they do 180 days a year work, that’s $278 a day for those 76 employees, and figuring everything else, it’s almost $40 an hour.”
— Leitersburg

“Ridge Road residents, stop the speeders on Ridge Road. Report them to the Pennsylvania State Police, Chambersburg, Pa., nonemergency, 717- 264-5161. Help get these lawbreakers off the road before another fatal accident happens and it is your loved one.”
— Greencastle, Pa.

“OK, they’ve laid off the school nurses. This is worse to me, as my child needs a nurse at least one time a day, due to health issues which will be a part of her life forever. I can’t find sense in this budget cut. The county commissioners in the past have backed a Little League team for travel expenses, and now the schools’ summer meal program is expanding. Where do health issues place on the list for budget? This all sounds like President Obama’s wacky health care reform. Sports, food and health.”
— Smithsburg

“Way to go, Maryland. Now we can vote on putting this same-sex marriage nonsense in the gutter, where it belongs. Way to go, way to step up.”
— Hagerstown

“A special thanks to the Washington County Roads Department for the work done on Shaffer Road. After it is completed, it will be so much better.”
— Downsville

“You stadium (proponents) should know that your Frederick counterparts are trying to get the Maryland Stadium Authority to finance a downtown hotel and conference center, using the same questionable claims you are. So does anyone believe this area can support two similar facilities, or that the stadium authority will finance both? And it’s revealing that despite the same claims about how profitable and successful they’ll be, in neither case a private developer is willing to use just their own money to build them, and so keep all the profits for themselves. Now that tells us much more than all your claims and propaganda about how viable they really are.”
— Frederick, Md.

“I agree with the person in Monday’s Mail Call from Hagerstown, about taking the nurses out of the schools. You so-called county commissioners, if this was your child in danger, would you do this? My grandchild is on four shots a day for No. 1 diabetes. She is in the nurse’s office at least five to six times a week because of her low sugar number. I will not vote for anyone that doesn’t like sick children.”
— Smithsburg

“I think the town of Williamsport needs to hire an official doggy pooper-scooper. Things are getting a little out of hand there, with pet owners walking their dogs on the street and just letting the poop lay. So I think the town needs to do something about it.”
— Williamsport
