Russell Virgil Walters Jr., 76, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born March 24, 1936, in Meadville, Pa., he was the son of the late Russell Virgil Sr. and Edith Grams Walters.

After graduating from high school, he went on to join the U.S. Air Force for four years, then the U.S. Army for 13 1/2 years. He last worked at Landis Tool Co. in Waynesboro, Pa., as a machinist, until he left due to medical reasons.

He was a life member of the National Rifle Association, AMVETS Post 10, and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 14.

He was an avid ham radio operator, N3KKQ, and an amateur radio operator, Tri-pod.

Survivors include wife, Nora Jacobs Walters; daughters, Michelle Walters Lewis of Hagerstown and Jennifer Walters of Cumberland, Md.; son-in-law, David Lewis of Hagerstown; grandsons, Jay Lewis, David Lewis II and John Lewis, all of Hagerstown; one brother, Ronald Walters Sr.; sister-in-law, Elsie Walters of Jefferson, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Norma Walters Jacobs-Riveria and Gloria Walters Sparks.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, June 18, at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Pastor Ronald K. Faith will officiate. Military honors will be conducted at the funeral home by the Washington County AMVETS Post 10 and the Marine Corps League of Hagerstown.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday two hours prior to the service, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
