Richard C. "Dick" Smith, 81, of Jefferson Boulevard, Chewsville, Md., passed away Monday, June 11, 2012, at his home.

Born Jan. 29, 1931, in Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of the late Harry W. and Catherine E. (Leather) Smith.

He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School and the University of Maryland.

He was employed by Landis Machine Co. of Waynesboro, Pa., and retired from the Maryland State Department of Education at Maryland Correctional Training Center of Hagerstown, where he was a machine shop teacher.

He was a member of Christ United Church of Christ, Cavetown, Md.; Eagles Club Inc. of Waynesboro; and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 378 of Hagerstown.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Phyllis E. (Leather) Smith, whom he married April 14, 1951; daughter, Brenda K. Ralls of Hagerstown and ex-husband, Dennis N. Ralls, of Smithsburg; sister, Patricia J. Davis and husband, Bill, of Smithsburg; brothers, James C. Smith and wife, Barbara, of Hagerstown, and Robert W. Smith and wife, Carol, of Frederick, Md.; grandson, Jason A. Ralls and wife, Angela, of Hagerstown; granddaughter, Katrina L. Ralls and companion, Rich, of Hagerstown; great-granddaughter, Arin E. Ralls of Hagerstown; step-great-granddaughters, Kimberly M. Holbrook and Amber Curry, both of Hagerstown; step-great-grandsons, Jay C. Holbrook Jr. and Ryan Curry, both of Hagerstown; step-great-great-grandson, Edward Grove of Hagerstown; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Friday, June 15, at 11 a.m. at Christ United Church of Christ, Cavetown, with the Revs. Travis Neumann and Carol D. Hallman officiating. Burial will be in Cavetown Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.
