Freida L. Reed, 82, of Pecktonville, Md., passed away Monday, May 28, 2012, at the Williamsport Nursing Home.
Born Sunday, Aug. 25, 1929, in Pecktonville, she was the daughter of the late Alfred E. Shives and the late Mary Margaret (Beard) Shives. She was preceded in death in 2004 by her loving husband of 55 years, Warren Edison Reed.
She graduated from Clear Spring High School in 1947 and from Columbia Business College in 1948. She was employed with Bowman Warne, where she was the private secretary for R. Carl Shank, until she married.
She was a longtime member of Parkhead United Methodist Church, and had been attending services at St. Ann Catholic Church, when she was able, with her daughter. She was very active with Parkhead United Methodist Church as a Sunday School teacher and member of the church choir. She quit singing after the death of her son, Jeffrey. She was well known for not only making but delivering fastnachts throughout the Pecktonville area. She was also known for her loving acts of kindness and gentle spirit. She was very active in the Pecktonville area and enjoyed her time spent there.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ellen Reed, of Hagerstown, Md.; two grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by daughter, Kristin Kay Reed Grosh; sons, W. Donovan Reed and Jeffrey L. Reed; and brother, Glenn O. E. Shives.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Wednesday, June 6, at St. Ann Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Martin Nocchi as celebrant.
The family received friends at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, on Tuesday, June 5.
Interment was in the Parkhead Cemetery.
