Fundraisers for Kahlil scheduled this weekend

Kahlil Butler, 12-year-old grandson of River City barber Donna Himes, is a leukemia patient at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., where he is currently receiving chemotherapy.

A classic car cruise-in and a fundraiser yard sale are planned for this weekend to benefit Kahlil. Details for each are listed below.

Cruise-in rescheduled for Friday evening

A classic car cruise-in that was rained out last week is scheduled for Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. on Potomac Street.

Music will be by the band “Chubby.” There will also be door prizes and 50/50.

A donation of $3 is requested. All proceeds will benefit Kahlil Butler.

Fundraiser yard sale to be held Saturday

A fundraiser yard sale will be held Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Community Building of Byron Memorial Park to benefit Kahlil Butler. In addition to many yard sale items, the event will also feature face-painting, a bake sale, music, concessions by Southhards and more.

Donated items (no clothes please) and baked goods for the yard sale can be dropped off at the River City Barber Shop, 2 S. Conococheague St., from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed Wednesdays).

Senior site community to hold yard sale

Williamsport’s senior site community will hold a yard sale on Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., from Otho Holland Drive to Coneflower Drive (off S. Artizan Street).

Chicken barbecue planned for Saturday

Downsville Christian Church, 8641 Downsville Pike, will hold its annual “Shorty” Mellott’s Famous Chicken Barbecue on Saturday from 11 a.m. until sold out.

The cost is $7 for a chicken dinner which includes applesauce, baked beans and a drink; or $6 for a half chicken only. Country ham sandwiches and baked items will also be available for purchase.

Vacation Bible school set at Downsville church

Downsville Christian Church will hold Vacation Bible school on Saturday, June 23, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Camp Mary-Mac near Sharpsburg.

The theme is “Sonrise National Park.”

Living history event planned for ‘Retreat through Williamsport’

On July 13-15, the Town of Williamsport and the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Park Service will host the 149th anniversary of the “Retreat through Williamsport.”

This is a living history event that focuses on the events in the area during Gen. Robert E. Lee’s retreat from Gettysburg, and Williamsport’s role during the Civil War.

Williamsport pool open

The L. Beard Miller Memorial Swimming Pool in Byron Memorial Park is now open.

Admission is $2 for children and $4 for adults. Individual seasonal memberships cost $60 each. A family of five seasonal membership is $200; each additional member of the family is $30.
