John Eber Burkholder, 99, of Chambersburg, Pa., and formerly of Maugansville, Md., went to be with his Lord Monday morning, June 4, 2012, at Menno Haven, Chambersburg.
He was the husband of the late Violet Shank Burkholder, who preceded him in death Jan. 16, 2009.
Born July 7, 1912, in Hagerstown, he was a son of the late Henry S. and Mary G. Horst Burkholder.
In 1936, in Maugansville, he opened and operated with his wife, Violet, Burkholder’s Floor Covering. In the early 1950s, the business moved to its present location on Pennsylvania Avenue. He remained active with the business until his retirement in his late 80s.
He was a member of Salem Ridge Community Church, Greencastle, Pa. In later years, his devotion led him and his wife to many parts of the world on mission trips, responding to human needs.
He is survived by his children, Marlin Burkholder and wife, Charlotte, of Harrisonburg, Va., Jean Peifer and husband, Ken, of Hagerstown, Md., and Joyce Burkholder of Lancaster, Pa.; six grandchildren; 17 great- grandchildren; as well as his older sister, Edith Burkholder of Maugansville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
