HAGERSTOWN — The Hagerstown Suns’ scheduled 7:05 p.m. game Friday against the Delmarva Shorebirds is being postponed due to the forecast of rain and possible strong thunderstorms tonight, the team’s owner said.
A double-header is scheduled at 6:05 p.m. Saturday.
The team, which is dedicating their 2012 campaign to 18-year-old Mitchell Akers, who died April 11 after an accident while working at Municipal Stadium, will recognize the late Smithsburg High School senior on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. instead, Suns majority owner Bruce Quinn said.
Quinn made the announcement in a telephone interview about 1 p.m. Friday, saying he didn’t want students and families coming out with bad storms headed toward the area.
On Friday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for Washington County, effective until 9 p.m.
The team plans to donate $5 from every ticket sold at Sunday’s game to the Mitchell Akers Leopard Memorial Scholarship Fund.
