Walter Leroy Marshall, 78, of Sharpsburg, Md., went to be with the Lord, surrounded by his large loving family, on Monday, May 28, 2012, at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown, Md.
Born May 26, 1934, in Samples Manor, Md., he was the son of the late Joseph Gilbert Marshall and Lily Viola McCoy Myers Marshall.
He was employed as a supervisor by State Use Industries at MCI until retiring in 1996. He was a talented furniture upholsterer, working throughout his career at Beachley Furniture in Hagerstown and at Armstrong in Martinsburg, W.Va.
He coached Little League baseball, and liked fishing, camping and hunting. He played fast-pitch softball in his early years. Before retirement, he was an avid woodworker, and after his retirement, he collected pen knives and enjoyed watching sports on TV, especially the Baltimore Orioles.
He was a member of Burnside First Church of God in Sharpsburg, where he served as a deacon and sang in the choir.
He is survived by his wife, Viola Lorraine Crampton Marshall, whom he married in 1951, of Sharpsburg; daughter, Tina L. Marshall Stotelmyer and her husband, Richard, of Keedysville, Md.; son, Terry E. Marshall and his wife, Martha, of Hagerstown; son, Keith D. Marshall and his wife, Dinah, of Sharpsburg; son, Timothy F. Marshall and his wife, Detra, of Hagerstown; son, Todd L. Marshall and his wife, Penny, of Sharpsburg; sister, Frances Marshall Tennant of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Alice Louise Myers Martin, Phyllis Lorraine Myers Knight, Beatrice Irene Myers Ingram and Sylvia Jean Marshall Hammersla; and one brother, Charles Kenneth "Tunie" Myers.
The family will receive friends Thursday, May 31, 2012, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, Md. The funeral home will be open Thursday after 9 a.m. for the convenience of family and friends.
Funeral services will be Friday, June 1, 2012, at 3 p.m. at Burnside First Church of God, with the Revs. Ernest E. Witmer and Terry E. Marshall officiating. Interment will be in Samples Manor Cemetery, Sharpsburg.
