School ends Friday

May 28, 2012|Susie Hoffman | Around Funkstown

Can you feel the excitement in the air? Do you realize that Friday is the last day of school for area students? Just half a day (technically, it’s a 2 1/2-hour-early dismissal) and then school is out for the summer. The two most exciting days of the school year were the first day and the last. Please be sure to be extra cautious to be aware of bike riders, kickball games and other summer staples as you drive in the area.

Perfect attendance

I can think of one young student who had yet another great school year. Abbie Rice of Funkstown is finishing her fifth-grade year with perfect attendance.

For your information, that’s not missing a day from kindergarten through the fifth grade, or 1,080 days. That’s a feat of its own.

Add into the mix that she made the honor roll for every period for every year, and I would have to say that’s fantastic, indeed.

Abbie took second place recently in the school geography bee, as well.

Enjoy your summer, Abbie. You deserve a break.

Busy weekend on tap in area

A busy, busy weekend is on the calendar with the annual Blues Fest and all it entails. City Park, downtown and Fairgrounds Park will all be buzzing with great music, fun, food and friends.

Be sure to save some time on Saturday to head over to the Ringgold Ruritan Club for its strawberry festival.  Fresh strawberries and strawberry desserts will be sold from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the club at 14247 Windy Haven Road, Smithsburg.

The weather is great, school is winding down and summer festivities are heading into full swing.

Have a safe and productive week.
