May 24, 2012

LAKEWOOD, N.J. — Taylor Hill and Aaron Barrett combined on a three-hit, 2-0 shutout in the opener of a doubleheader before the Hagerstown Suns finished a sweep of the Lakewood BlueClaws by scoring in the eighth inning of a 4-3 victory in the nightcap Thursday night in the South Atlantic League.

Hill (4-3) worked 6 1/3 scoreless innings in the opener, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out seven. Those two walks came on the last two batters Hill faced with one out in the seventh, before Barrett got his fourth save by retiring both hitters he faced.

The Suns (26-19) scored the only two runs of the game in the fourth off BlueClaws starter Ethan Stewart (0-5). Jason Martinson led off with an infield single and went to second when third baseman Maikel Franco’s throw was wild. Martinson scored on Matthew Skole’s RBI double left. Steven Souza’s single moved Skole to third, and Skole scored on Caleb Ramsey’s sacrifice fly.

In the nightcap, Lakewood (18-27) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Hagerstown starter Pedro Encarnacion. Gauntlett Eldemire led off with a double and scored on Kelly Dugan’s triple. Dugan scored on Harold Martinez’s groundout.

The score stayed 2-0 until the sixth, when the Suns took the lead on two swings. Singles by Billy Burns and Cutter Dykstra set the stage for Martinson’s two-run triple and Skole’s RBI single for a 3-2 lead.

The BlueClaws forced extra innings with Brian Pointer’s leadoff home run off Hagerstown reliever Colin Bates (1-0) in the seventh.

The Suns took a 4-3 lead in the eighth. Dykstra singled with one out, stole second and scored on a fielding error by first baseman Kelly Dugan.
