There were 132 runners and walkers who participated in this year's 5K for Hospice of Washington County to remember loved ones.

"Many of the participants did fundraising to earn a special race day shirt with the name of their loved one printed on back," said Cheryl Brown, development director for Hospice of Washington County.

Brown said 11 people walked or ran in memory of Todd Staley. The team bearing his name raised  $3,500 of the $15,000 raised for this event

"It was awesome to see all those steel-gray shirts representing one person who was near and dear to this community," she said.

This is the third year that Hospice of Washington County hosted a 5K and the second year that they piggybacked on the Racine MultiSports Hagerstown 5K at Martin L. "Marty" Snook Memorial Park in Halfway.

"It's a privilege to give people the opportunity to remember their loved ones in this way," Brown said. "Everyone tears up when I show them their special ‘one of a kind' race day shirt for the first time."

The Frederic H. Kass II M.D. Endowed Scholarship will award two to three $1,000 scholarships this spring.

There were 15 applications received.
