HAGERSTOWN — His eyes.
Everything surrounding him.
Fans of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series racer Kasey Kahne said those were among the reasons they came out to the Hagerstown Speedway Sunday night to catch a glimpse of the heartthrob driver.
Kahne was racing in the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series at the local track, and his fans were ecstatic.
Renae Metz of Roaring Spring, Pa., said she has been following Kahne for about four years and has met him at several other venues.
So what do you like about him?
“His beautiful eyes,” Metz said.
Metz was at the racing event with Dustin Vanwinkle, whom she plans to marry.
“Unless Kasey wants to take me home. Then all bets are off,” Metz said.
Kahne periodically appeared in the pit area before the races and posed in pictures with race fans.
Kahne is typically seen in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series racing on asphalt, but he said Sunday night that he likes sprint-car racing on dirt because that’s the sport in which he started.
“I don’t get to do this too often,” Kahne said.
Although track Manager Lisa Plessinger said Sunday night that she did not have complete attendance figures before the start of the races, she said the track received increased interest in the event through telephone calls and website traffic.
“It’s just like when the Hagerstown Suns has Strasburg in,” Plessinger said.
Plessinger was referring to pro pitcher Stephen Strasburg, who played some with the Hagerstown Suns last year after undergoing Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery.
Amanda Green of Waynesboro, Pa., said she tries to catch Kahne in person at racing events anytime she can.
When Green was asked about what attracts her to Kahne, she said “everything. What’s not to like about Kasey Kahne?”
Ken Swauger of Hagerstown and his wife, Chrissy, were at the track for their first World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series race. The couple said they mostly go to NASCAR competitions. They didn’t know Kahne was at the track, and when told about his presence, they planned to dig out their camera and search for him.
