Goretti, Heritage earn playoff wins

WASHINGTON — Jackson Roth had two hits, including a grand slam, and five RBIs to lead St. Maria Goretti past CHEN 14-4 in the quarterfinals of the Maryland Private School state tournament on Friday.

Kevin Proctor had two hits and two RBIs for the Gaels (14-12), who will play today at 4 p.m. in the semifinals at Germantown.

Heritage 19, Shalom 4

Chad Lowry had three hits and six RBIs, and Bryce Nigh settled in after a rough first inning as Heritage Academy advanced to the Mason Dixon Christian Conference tournament championship game with a win over Shalom Christian at Hellane Park.

Nigh (9-1) gave up four runs and four hits in the first inning, including a three-run homer by Aaron Witman, but shut down the Flames on two hits the rest of the way.

Heritage trailed 4-1 before scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the third to take control. The Eagles (12-1) added eight more runs in the fourth.

David Fisler and Ian Rohrbaugh each had two hits, while Rohrbaugh and Ethan Nield each drove in two runs for Heritage, which will play Cumberland Valley Christian in the tournament final Monday at 7 p.m. at CVCS.

Alex Crilley and Matt Wenger had two hits each for Shalom (5-9).

Winston-Salem State 6, Shepherd 5

WEST LAWN, Pa. — Winston-Salem State took a 6-1 lead over Shepherd University, then held off the Rams’ rally for a 6-5 win in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament, ending Shepherd’s season.

Nathan Minnich’s RBI double pulled the Rams (30-22) into a 1-1 tie in the first inning, but Winston-Salem (35-20) scored the next five runs.

Shepherd cut the lead to 6-3 in the eighth on Chad Murphy’s two-run home run down the right-field line.

The Rams added two in the ninth to make it close. Minnich delivered an RBI single and Nash Hutter drove in a run with an infield single. But Winston-Salem reliever Wesley Edwards got out of a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout to end the game.

Four Rams make All-Region

Senior first baseman Nathan Minnich, sophomore pitcher Paul Hvozdovic, senior designated hitter Nash Hutter and junior second baseman Chad Murphy have all gained All-Region accolades.

Minnich was a unanimous first-team choice and named Regional Player of the Year by Daktronics and NCBWA. He recorded a team-best .487 batting average (74-for-152). Minnich led the Rams in hits (74), RBIs (72), runs (69), total bases (149), walks (62), home runs (21), slugging percentage (.980) and on-base percentage (.645). He leads NCAA Division II in on-base percentage, slugging percentage and home runs per game (0.46) while ranking second in batting average, home runs, RBIs and walks.

Hvozdovic was a second-team selection by NCBWA, ABCA/Rawlings and Daktronics. He posted a 10-4 record with two saves and a 2.57 ERA. Hvozdovic had team-highs of 81 strikeouts in 108 2/3 innings. His 10 wins tied a Shepherd single-season record.

Hutter earned second-team honors from Daktronics and honorable mention NCBWA accolades. He recorded a .322 average (57-for-177), drove in 51 runs and scored 39. He was second on the team with 10 homers and added 12 doubles and a triple.

Murphy garnered honorable mention NCBWA honors. He batted .351 (60-for-171). He drove in 40 runs and scored 43, and added 14 doubles and four homers.
