Prep Track: Boonsboro girls, Smithsburg boys rule 1A West

FROSTBURG, Md. — The Boonsboro girls and Smithsburg boys track and field teams began this spring on quests for Maryland Class 1A state titles.

They’re both still headed in the right direction as they’ll go to the state meet in Baltimore next week as West region champions. They won those titles Friday at Mountain Ridge High School.

The Boonsboro girls, the defending state champions, dominated Friday, winning seven of the 18 events and racking up 143.5 points. Mountain Ridge finished a distant second (95) in the 12-team field, while Manchester Valley was third (88.5).

“It’s great to win, but the real goal was to get people qualified for states,” Boonsboro coach Becky Walter said. “The girls have been training for this all year, and the hard work’s paying off.”

The Smithsburg boys made a late charge to get past Brunswick 99-89, while Boonsboro finished third (83).

“Our boys did a really nice job of going out there and earning those points,” Smithsburg coach T.J. Hood said. “We only won four events, but that’s a theme at Smithsburg. The kids who win get the accolades, but it’s the kids who get a third-place here and a fifth-place there that add up to a team title.”

The Smithsburg boys won the 4x100 (45.37) and 4x200 (1:31.71) and got victories from Zane Gardenhour in the long jump (20-3 1/2) and Nick Porter in the pole vault (11-6).

The Boonsboro girls once again were led by Abby Duncan, who won the 100 (12.30) and 200 (26.45) and anchored the first-place 4x200 (1:47.61) and second-place 4x100 (50.68).

But she left the meet with a bad taste in her mouth, as the Warriors fell just short in the 4x100, her final event.

“I’m mad, I had a streak going, I wanted four wins,” Duncan said. “It’s frustrating with handoffs and getting them perfect. Sometimes it doesn’t work. It’s disappointing because we were seeded first, but at least we qualified for states."

Sarah Zielinski won the 1,600 (5:24.00) and 3,200 (11:40.29) for the Boonsboro girls, who also got wins from Courtney Rose in the triple jump (32-1) and Amber Smith in the shot put (31-10 1/2).

The Boonsboro boys dominated in the throws, taking the top three places in the shot put and top two in the discus. J.R. Lowery won both — the shot put at 53-4 3/4 and the discus at 146-5.

“My goal coming into today was to break the county record in the shot put (57-10 1/2),” said Lowery, the defending state champ in the shot put. “But I’ll save it for states. I’ll have a little more competition there.”

Lowery hopes to add a title in the discus as well.

“Being a dual state winner in the same season has been my goal since freshman year,” he said. “Hopefully I’ll get it done this year.”

Second-place girls finishers Friday included Smithsburg’s Emma Gerhold in the pole vault (9-4), Taylor Cline in the long jump (16-5 1/4) and Kayla Hott in the shot put (30-11), Clear Spring’s Valerie Carey in the high jump (4-10) and Boonsboro’s Smith in the discus (95-10).

Second-place boys finishers included Smithsburg’s Breon Hall in the 200 (23.03) and Gardenhour in the triple jump (41-8), Boonsboro’s Sean Snyder in the 3,200 (10:26.14), Britton Beard in the shot put (43-5) and Gerrick Allen in the discus (126-11) and Hancock’s Aaron Wagner in the pole vault (11-6).

NOTE: The Boonsboro girls will have to defend their state title without sophomore Maggie Sullivan, last year’s state champion in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles.

Sullivan, who had been sidelined since early April with a stress fracture in her foot, returned to the track Friday and ran in the 100 hurdles trials. While she qualified for the final, she did not compete in it.

“It hurt after the trials. ... She just wasn’t ready,” Walter said. “We take a hit losing Maggie, but I still think we’ll be OK.”
