After a successful spring season, the city of Hagerstown is getting ready to kick off its summer recreation sports leagues later this month and into June.

City Recreation Coordinator Andy Hoffman said more than 300 people participated during the spring season, and more are expected to take part in 14 leagues for 10 different sports over the summer.

“Most of our spring participants are returning, and we’re trying to build on the good turnout from spring with new teams,” Hoffman said in an email. “It wouldn’t surprise me to be up to 16-plus teams in the adult basketball league. I think the youth basketball leagues and wiffleball leagues are going to be great additions.”

So far, 12 teams have signed up for Sunday night adult basketball, while seven teams are ready to go in adult dodgeball on Tuesdays and five more in coed adult kickball teams on Mondays.

“I know I’m looking forward to being this active, and we’re ready for the city to jump in with us,” Hoffman said.

Other sports include disc golf on Mondays, adult Wiffleball on Wednesdays, 4-on-4 flag football on Thursdays, adult ball hockey and coed adult touch football on Saturdays.

In addition, golf leagues are currently registering for Hagerstown Greens at Hamilton Run. Leagues begin May 29 and will take place Monday mornings (seniors), as well as Tuesday mornings, and Wednesday and Thursday evenings, Hoffman said.

Although disc golf is scheduled to kick the season off on Monday at Hamilton Run, there is still time to sign up, Hoffman said.

Hoffman said the city held sign-up nights this past week, but people can also register at the city’s recreation office at 351 N. Cleveland Ave. during normal business hours.

The final sign-up night will be May 24, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the recreation office, Hoffman said.

“We will also be doing registrations at any of our events,” he said.

League fees range from $30 to $50 per 10-week season for individuals, which equates to about $3 to $5 per week, Hoffman said.

“Compare us to a drop-in at a gym, and we’re an economical choice for exercise, socializing and fun,” he said.
