Mail Call - May 16

May 16, 2012

“If I was put in charge of welfare, I would put everyone to work, except people on disability. And their employer would give them their welfare check.”

— Hagerstown

“Someone said if they build a stadium in downtown Hagerstown, maybe someone would put in a sports bar. Does downtown really need another bar? I mean, there is one in every block. That’s why I don’t go downtown, because you don’t feel safe walking on the street, with people coming out intoxicated, and all the smokers hanging out.”

— Hagerstown

“My husband and I would like to thank the very generous and wonderful people who stopped and tried to help us when our car would not start in the Sam’s Club parking lot last Saturday. Thank you very, very much. We really appreciate it. That was Saturday the 5th.”

— Falling Waters, W.Va.

“I just witnessed a school bus passing a recycle truck, while the boys were dumping the recycle in the back of the truck. This was very unsafe, and if we have to stop for school buses, should we not show our garbage men and recycle men the same respect, instead of taking the chance of hitting them? They’re out there to do a job, so can’t we respect them? Have a good day.”

— Hagerstown

“In reference to the May 8, Tuesday paper, on A15 and another couple of areas, the city of Hagerstown and Washington County are setting the tax rate. What, based on this, is this with the doomsday budget that they’re apparently going to vote on or not vote on down there, and how it affects the city, the county and the BOE, or doesn’t it? What’s going to happen if the doomsday goes in effect? Is that how this is based on?”

— Leitersburg

“Some folks may consider it to be a blessing to be receiving all kinds of free help from the government or from local charities, but I for one will have to make do without it, as I still believe that honesty is the best policy to live by.”

— Hancock

“I think we all know why The Herald-Mail keeps pushing for the downtown stadium. They’ll make millions of dollars selling their ... property. What I don’t understand is why the county commissioners keep spending county taxpayer money to help fund the city of Hagerstown’s pipe dreams. There are other towns in the county who need the money for their projects.”

— Williamsport

“I just wanted to say rest in peace, MCA. You’ll always be as cool as a cucumber in a bowl of hot sauce.”

— Smithsburg

“For those brilliant minds planning on spending $30 million in our dying and decaying downtown Hagerstown: Take a trip quickly to St. Louis, Missouri, home of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and Busch Stadium, that sits in the heart of downtown St. Louis. All they have are bars, taverns, restaurants. I repeat, bars, restaurants and taverns. And that we have already in Hagerstown. We don’t need any more.”

— Hagerstown

“I’m just going to make the comment that you’re already worried to death on prom night, what your children may or may not do, driving, and I just don’t understand, not that it would change any outcome whatsoever what happened the other night, but why would we send our kids to another state ... instead of just having it at their high school, as they did when I was in school?”

— Boonsboro

“Calling in response to the caller who stated that senior citizens are upset about the new senior center. I’m a senior citizen, and the senior citizens I know do not want the senior center. We would much rather go to a ball game, go to The Maryland Theatre, or other things, than sit around and watch people play cards. The senior citizen (center) is a waste of taxpayers’ money.”

— Hagerstown
