Skole, Souza lay switch to Hickory

HICKORY, N.C. — Matt Skole went 4-for-4 with five RBIs to lead the Hagerstown Suns to a 12-4 rout of Hickory on Tuesday to assume sole possession of second place in the South Atlantic League’s Northern Division.

Skole hit two home runs to pace the Suns (20-15) to their third-straight victory to move one game ahead of the Crawdads. The Suns remain six games behind division-leading Greensboro.

Stephen Souza lent a hand in the Suns’ 13-hit onslaught with three hits, with a pair of doubles and a homer, and three RBIs as Hagerstown scored at least one run in six of the nine innings.

Starting pitcher Kylin Turnbull (1-2) went five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts to earn his first win. Hagerstown led 9-3 by the time he left the game.

The Suns took a 3-0 lead in the first against Hickory starter Santo Perez (2-2) on a Jason Martinson RBI groundout and Skole’s first homer, a two-run shot.

The Crawdads answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Hanser Alberto.

Hagerstown grabbed the lead for good with three runs in the third for a 6-3 lead. Skole had an RBI single and Souza drove in a run with his first double, both after Billy Burns stole home.

Justin Miller hit his fourth homer in the fourth to give the Suns a 7-3 lead.

Hagerstown jumped to a six-run lead with two more in the fifth on Souza’s second RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Miller.

Hickory picked up a run off Suns reliever Todd Simko to cut the deficit to 9-4 in the sixth on Trever Adams’ single.

The Suns greeted Hickory reliever Nicholas Martinez with back-to-back homers by Skole and Souza to open the seventh for an 11-4 advantage. It was Skole’s eighth while Souza connected for his sixth of the season.

Hagerstown got its final run in the eighth on an RBI double by Skole.
