Town and Country Garden Club awards $500 to each county student

May 13, 2012

The Town and Country Garden Club of Hagerstown recently awarded two $500 scholarships to local students.

The winners of the 2012 scholarship are Joshua Ernst of Clear Spring and Logan McSherry of Smithsburg.

McSherry, a senior at Smithsburg High School, holds a 4.0 grade-point average. He plans to attend Hagerstown Community College in the fall, eventually transferring to a four-year institution, where he will complete his studies for a degree in landscape architecture. He hopes to eventually design golf courses.

Ernst is a second-time winner of the scholarship. He is completing his first year of study at Potomac State College, pursuing a degree in agri-business. Since receiving the 2011 scholarship for his outstanding high school achievement, he has continued the same excellent performance at Potomac State, where he is on the dean’s list and continues his many leadership qualities. Once he completes his education, he plans to return to Washington County and manage his family’s farm.

The scholarships were established in order for club members to contribute to the ongoing education of area students. The scholarships are awarded to students graduating from Washington County high schools who will be entering a college or university with a major in horticulture, agriculture, landscape design or other related fields.

Previous recipients who are continuing their education and have maintained a 3.0 or higher grade-point average are eligible to apply for a second year.
