Trial of Hagerstown man charged with DUI resulting in death postponed

May 11, 2012

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The trial of a Hagerstown man accused of fleeing the scene of a fatal motorcycle crash in April 2011 has been postponed from June 12 until September 18 to allow his attorney more time prepare the defense case.

Steven Edward Thompson, 46, of 12202 Cedar Crest Ave., is charged with driving under the influence resulting in death, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and leaving the scene of an accident involving an unattended vehicle.

Lorena Beth “Lori” Roberts, 43, of Bunker Hill, W.Va., died April 14, 2011, at the scene of the crash in the 6500 block of Winchester Avenue, which is also U.S. 11, police have said.

Roberts was riding on the motorcycle that Thompson was operating around 11 p.m. when the southbound motorcycle struck a utility pole and the rear of a 1997 Ford F-150 pickup truck near Miss Bobbi’s bar in Darkesville near Inwood, W.Va., police have said.

Defense attorney Shawn McDermott told 23rd Judicial Circuit Judge John C. Yoder that they did not have enough time for defense experts to review evidence in the case and prepare reports for trial.

McDermott also noted that the previously scheduled trial conflicted with another trial set in Jefferson County.
