Esther Lorraine Saunders, 70, of 221 East Ave., Hagerstown, Md., passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at her home, surrounded by her family.

Born Saturday, Jan. 24, 1942, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late David Elmer Long and Edna Mae (Fletcher) Long.

She was employed by the Washington County Board of Education, retiring in 2004 after 29 years of service. She was a member of New Life Christian Ministries. Esther was a lover of animals and took in any animal that needed care.

She is survived by her daughters, Lisa Martin and Laura Blickenstaff, both of Hagerstown; sons, Charles Saunders and wife, Dixie, Christopher Saunders and wife, Sherry, both of Hagerstown; sisters, Violet Remsburg of Hagerstown and Bessie Little of Big Pool, Md.; brothers, Archie Long of Hagerstown and Ernest Long of Clear Spring, Md.; lifelong friend, Norma Bussard of Boonsboro, Md.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Edna Bond, Viola Ferguson and Mae Ferguson; and one brother, Elmer Long.

Services will be held Sunday, May 13, at 1 p.m. at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, with Pastor Ken Harris officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, May 12, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Interment will be at Broadfording Memorial Gardens, Hagerstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Washington County, 13011 Maugansville Road, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
