Smithsburg Councilman Donnie Souders was re-elected, while Heath Abbott and Jim Fritsch won two other open council seats Tuesday, according to Town Manager Betsy Martin.

Souders and Fritsch each received 110 votes, and Abbott garnered 54 votes in a five-way race for three Smithsburg Town Council seats, Martin said.

John Karroll received 52 votes, and Victor James 46 votes, Martin said.

Martin said 148 votes were cast in the election. The town has 1,726 registered voters.

Sounders is the only candidate who had filed to run in the election by the April 2 filing deadline.

Disappointed over low interest in the election, town officials discovered they could hold a special town meeting to find more candidates.

The meeting was held on April 23, and four more people were nominated for the council.

Abbott said he has lived in town almost seven years and is a project manager for Building Systems Inc., a general contracting business in Hagerstown.

Fritsch said he runs First Financial Group, a Hagerstown business that specializes in insurance and investment services. He said he has lived in Smithsburg since 1990.

Souders won a seat on the council in 2008.
