Mr. James V. Fermes, 78, of Gerrardstown, W.Va., died suddenly Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at the residence of his grandson, George E. Stull and his wife, Candice Brown-Stull. He was the husband of Mrs. Erma Grace Stover Fermes, who preceded him in death on Jan. 30, 1998.

Born March 17, 1934, in Hagerstown, he was a son of the late Leroy James Fermes and Mildred Virginia Grubb Fermes Swenson.

Retired since 1996, Mr. Fermes worked for the Washington County Board of Education, working first for Emma K. Doub Elementary School, then Williamsport High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of Williamsport American Legion Post 202.

Surviving are his daughters, Elizabeth A. Butts and Shena M. Zellers, both of Clear Spring, and Paula Cline and Wilma E. Stull, both of Hagerstown; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Ronald E. Stover.

The funeral service will be Saturday, May 5, at 11 a.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
