Cumberland Valley School of music presents awards

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Cumberland Valley School of Music presented the CVSM Awards Concert on Sunday, April 22, at Thomson Alumnae Chapel, Wilson College, Chambersburg.

The recital featured the winners of CVSM’s merit scholarship competition, which was held on March 31, as well as graduating seniors who are going on to pursue careers in music and the winner of this year’s Benjamin Rhine Scholarship.

In the Merit Awards Competition, students vied for awards in instrumental, piano and vocal categories. Evaluated by judges on such criteria as technique, tone, interpretation, stage presence and sight-reading, the first three prizewinners in each category performed. Winners this year are:

 Vocal Awards

First Place: The Margaret Weeks Vocal Scholarship — Marina Addlesberger, who studies voice at CVSM with Suzanne Sweigert, a 10th-grade homeschooled student and  the daughter of Mary and Jim Addlesberger of Chambersburg.

Second Place — Elizabeth Malone, who studies voice at CVSM with Elisabeth Turchi, is an eighth-grade student at Chambersburg Area Middle School North and the daughter of Charles and Karen Malone of Chambersburg.

Third Place — Katarina Johannson, who studies voice at CVSM with Elisabeth Turchi, is an eighth-grade student at Montessori Academy of Chambersburg and the daughter of Elizabeth Johannson of Chambersburg.

Piano Awards

First Place – McQuire Allen-Hall, who studies piano at CVSM with Brian Helman, is a ninth-grade student at Mercersburg Academy and the daughter of Sanda and Michael Allen-Hall of Chambersburg.

Second Place – Rebekah Duvall, who studies piano at CVSM with Julia Emig, is a fourth-grade student at Greencastle-Antrim Elementary School and the daughter of Paul and Anne Duvall of Greencastle, Pa.

Third Place – Frank Heberlig, who studies piano at CVSM with Brian Helman, is a ninth-grade student at Shippensburg Area High School and the son of Lance and Susan Heberlig of Newburg, Pa.

Instrumental Awards

First Place — Monica Divinagracia (violin), who studies at CVSM with Deborah Stotelmyer, is an 11th-grade student at St. Maria Goretti High School and the daughter of Glenn and Joan Divinagracia of Hagerstown.

Second Place — Rebecca Li (flute), who studies at CVSM with Suzanne Thierry, is a seventh-grade student at Chambersburg Area Middle School South and the daughter of Jianzhong Li and Lihong Xing of Chambersburg.

Third Place — Abigail Duvall (violin), who studies at CVSM with Cindy Scanzello, is a sixth-grade student at Greencastle-Antrim Middle School and the daughter of Paul and Anne Duvall of Greencastle.

The Benjamin A. Rhine Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Abigail Mosier, a CVSM student of Paul Grane (clarinet); and Gloria McCauley (trumpet), an 11th-grade student at Chambersburg Area Senior High School and the daughter of Roger and Barb Lange of Chambersburg. The scholarship is awarded to the CVSM student who is studying and displaying aptitude on multiple instruments. 

Graduates to be honored

In addition, CVSM will honor graduating seniors who are going on to pursue careers in music or the performing arts or are past merit award winners.

Monica Miller (violin) — attends Shalom Christian Academy, daughter of Virginia and Ray Miller of Greencastle

Paul Lessard (saxophone and piano) — attends Chambersburg Area Senior High School, son of Jean and Randy Lessard of Chambersburg

Zach Long (trombone) — attends Chambersburg Area Senior High School, son of Kevin and Vicki Long of Chambersburg

Evan Paden (classical guitar) — attends St. Maria Goretti High School, son of Lavonne Paden of Shepherdstown, W.Va.

Martin Smith (string bass) — attends Chambersburg Area High School, son of Keith and Monica Smith
