WAYNESBORO, Pa. — The Greencastle-Antrim softball team managed just one run on four hits the first two times the Blue Devils’ batting order faced Waynesboro’s Callie Good.

Trailing 3-1, Greencastle’s bats came to life in the fifth inning. The first seven hitters reached base and scored, and the Blue Devils scored eight runs on eight hits to take control on the way to an 11-4 victory Tuesday.

“We felt like our bats would come alive. We have a pretty solid hitting team,” said Greencastle coach Jamie Richardson, whose Blue Devils (13-4) finished with 16 hits — 12 in the final three innings. “That’s the sign of a good team, a team that battles back.”

Rachel Kline, Amanda Wink and Cassey Cordell each hit RBI singles in the fifth off Good, who did not get an out in the inning before being relieved by Delaney Blubaugh. Katie Gelsinger drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Jenna Crunkleton capped the scoring with a two-run single.

Waynesboro (3-11) hurt itself with two errors in the fifth, which led to the last two Greencastle runs being unearned.

“It’s been that way all year — we cash in on some opportunities, get ahead and then it caves in on us,” Maidens coach Doug Stuart said. “Did Greencastle battle back? Sure. Should they have scored that many runs? We should have been out of that inning.”

Greencastle took a 1-0 lead in the first on Kline’s RBI single, but Waynesboro took advantage of two walks and three Blue Devils errors to score three runs in the third. Good’s RBI single was the only hit for the Maidens in the inning.

Crunkleton capped Greencastle’s scoring with a two-run homer in the seventh, giving her four RBIs.

Kline finished with three hits, while Wink, Cordell, Mary Ward and Tiffany Briggs each added two hits for the Blue Devils. Wink struck out seven in a complete-game victory.

Consecutive singles by Megan Baker, Kaelyn Ashway and Good gave Waynesboro its final run in the top of the seventh. Good had three hits and two RBIs.
