Weis Markets helping shelter

Weis Markets is partnering with local shelters and rescue agencies through May 26 for its third annual Paws for Pets food supply and donation drive. 

The Weis Market on Eastern Boulevard at the corner of Dual Highway and Eastern Boulevard is collecting donations for the Humane Society of Washington County. 

Bracelets will be sold at the registers for $1, with all proceeds benefitting the animal shelter. 

Weis employees will sell $1, $3 and $5 vouchers for those who do not want a bracelet but would like to contribute to the shelter.  

A designated shopping cart will be in the front of the store for customers who would like to donate food and supplies to the shelter. A wish list will be posted in the animal-supply aisle.

Lioness Club to meet Thursday

The regular meeting of the Hagerstown Lioness club will be Thursday at the Academy Theatre Banquet & Conference Center in downtown Hagerstown.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.

The guest speaker will be Tom Riford, president and chief executive officer of the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Riford will talk about plans for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

Women’s Club to host wine and cheese tasting

The community is invited to an evening of wine and cheese tasting at the Women’s Club Friday, May 18, at 6 p.m.

Tickets cost $5 and include cheese tasting from Palmyra Cheese LLC and wine tasting from Knob Hall Winery of Clear Spring. Appetizers  will also be available.

The event will include raffles and a silent auction of gift baskets and merchandise. To make a reservation, call the club at 301-739-0870.


Mother’s Day tea planned at church

Emmanuel United Methodist Church will hold a Mother’s Day tea Wednesday, May 16, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Light snacks will be provided along with various teas.

There will also be gifts, door prizes and a make-and-take craft for children.

A clothes/accessory closet will be available for dads to make a Mother’s Day gift for mom. 

The community is invited.

The church is at 802 Summit Ave., on the corner of Summit Avenue and Howard Street in Hagerstown.

Games for dogs

Games for dogs are held on designated Fridays at the Peaceable Paws dog training facility in Fairplay.

The events are from 7 to 9 p.m. The next one is “My Dog Can Do That” on Friday, May 18.

The charge is $5 per dog. There is no charge for spectators.

Prizes are awarded to the first-, second- and third-place winners.

All proceeds go to the Humane Society of Washington County.
