Harold "Lefty" Lefferts, 91, of Hagerstown, Md., died Thursday, April 26, 2012, at Meritus Medical Center.
Born July 21, 1920, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of the late Albert and Florence Lefferts.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Kuhn Lefferts; son, Thomas Lefferts; one sister; two brothers; and stepgrandson, Bret Michael Crowell.
Harold was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps with the 1st Marine Division that landed on Guadalcanal in 1942 in the South Pacific theater.
He was employed by the City of Hagerstown as a police officer, retiring after 28 years of service. He later worked part time at F&M Bank.
He was a lifelong member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, participating in the Busy Men's Sunday school class and Otterbein Seniors Group.
He enjoyed traveling and ballroom dancing.
He is survived by his second wife, Janet Crowell Lefferts; son, Harold William Lefferts; stepdaughters, Judy Crowell Brezler and Sharon Crowell Ridenour; stepson, Thomas Crowell; grandchildren, Tammy Michaels, Eddie Lefferts, Michael Lefferts and Kelly Lefferts; stepgrandchildren, Lon Crowell, Amie Hersh and Allison Jakoby; six great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Dr. Stephen D. Robison will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
A memorial service will be held at the funeral home Monday at 6:30 p.m. by the Fraternal Order of Police.
