A Williamsport woman died Friday afternoon at Meritus Medical Center from injuries she sustained in a single-vehicle accident on Sterling Road at Bower Avenue, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said.

A vehicle driven by Martha J. Reid, 62, of 17217 Sterling Road, went off the roadway and struck a tree, Lt. Thomas Newton said.

He said he wasn’t sure whether a medical condition caused her death.

“They’re probably going to do an autopsy,” Newton said.

Deputies were called at noon for a report of a single-vehicle accident at the site, which is just west of Martin L. “Marty” Snook Memorial Park, according to a sheriff’s office news release. When deputies arrived, they saw fire and rescue personnel treating the female driver of the vehicle. She was unconscious and in serious condition, the release said.

Reid was taken to Meritus Medical Center, where she died from her injuries.

The Buick Lucerne that Reid was driving sustained severe front-end damage.

A dog in the vehicle was unharmed.

Sterling Road was closed from Bower Avenue to Downsville Pike while the accident scene was cleared.
