Mr. David L. Henson, age 65, of Winston-Salem, N.C., died April 23, 2012, from complications of cancer.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 5, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in North Wilkesboro, N.C., with the Revs. Keith Franklin and Earl Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends after the service in the church Faith Center.

Mr. Henson was born in Hagerstown, Md., on Nov. 27, 1946, to David Newton Henson and Maxine Brooks Henson. He received Bachelor of Science and Master of Business Administration degrees from the University of Maryland at College Park and a Master of Health Administration degree from Duke University in Durham, N.C.

Mr. Henson is survived by his wife of almost 34 years, Wanda Mintz Henson, of the home, an oncology RN at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center; father, David Newton Henson of Williamsport, Md.; and three sons, Matthew Christopher Henson, formerly of Washington, D.C., now a student in the Master of Business Administration program at Wake Forest University Schools of Business in Winston-Salem, and his wife, Roxana Azambuja, a recent graduate of the UCLA School of Business-Extension Program; Scott Brooks Henson, a student at Forsyth Technical Community College and employee of The Budd Group, Winston-Salem; and Brett Russell Henson, a first-year dental student at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Dentistry.

Mr. Henson served in the U.S. Army after completing his undergraduate degree and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal. After his military service, Mr. Henson returned to school for graduate degrees and retired in 2009 after working in health care as a hospital administrator for more than 30 years. Mr. Henson was a member of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem; Rotary Club of West Forsyth; volunteer for the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center; past member of Great Basin College Advisory Board, Elko, Nev.; a member of the Rotary Club of Elko; past president and former campaign chairman of United Way of Wilkes County; board member and past treasurer of North Wilkesboro Rotary Club; and former Wilkes Chamber of Commerce board member and Economic Development Committee member.

Mr. Henson had a lifelong interest in history and the American Civil War. He enjoyed touring national parks and historic sites in America. He loved attending and watching college basketball games, especially the storied Atlantic Coast Conference rivalries. He volunteered with track and field activities at Wilkes Central High School and Central Wilkes Middle School, and he once held a track record at South Hagerstown High School.

Mr. Henson enjoyed assisting with activities for Boy Scout Troop 336 while living in Wilkes County and joined the troop on an adventure trip to Montana and Wyoming in 2004. He had been ill with sarcoma the past four years. He especially enjoyed time spent with his wife and sons, and visiting his father in Williamsport.
