Suns offense explodes as Souza drives in nine in rout of Braves

April 25, 2012

ROME, Ga. — Steven Souza was one of only two Hagerstown Suns starters not to get a hit in Tuesday’s win over the Rome Braves.

He wasn’t about to be left out on Wednesday.

Souza went 4-for-6 and drove in nine runs as the Suns pounded out 24 hits and pummeled Rome 24-2.

Billy Burns, Jason Martinson, Caleb Ramsey, Justin Miller and Bryce Ortega each had three hits for Hagerstown (10-8), who have collected 37 hits in the first two games of the series with the Braves.

The Suns batted around in both the first and fifth innings and only failed to score in the fourth and sixth innings.

Souza’s big night started in the top of the first. With the Suns already leading 1-0, Souza stroked a three-run triple to left field.

His next big blow — a two-run single to center — came in the Suns’ next big inning, a six-run fifth that gave Hagerstown a 14-2 lead.

In the Suns’ four-run seventh, Souza cracked a three-run homer to center. He also added an RBI single in the eighth.

Ortega scored five runs and Matthew Skole drew five walks in the game.
