Robert Lee Kline, 82, of 20 E. Green St., Funkstown, Md., died Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at Williamsport Nursing Home in Williamsport, Md.
Born Jan. 19, 1930, in Funkstown, he was the son of the late Charles Granville and Arlene Baker Kline Frazee.
He was a graduate of the Hagerstown High School Class of 1947. He lettered in baseball, and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland.
He was employed by Colonial Hardwood Flooring. He was a carpentry and cabinetry teacher at Career Studies Center (Washington County Technical High School).
He served as a board member on the Washington County Board of Education for four years. He was mayor of Funkstown for 28 years.
He was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Funkstown, serving on the choir and church council, and was the youth group leader.
He played first base in the Washington County Independent Baseball League for 17 years, receiving awards for most valuable player and home run leader. He was a member of National Little League Baseball, where he helped to start a minor division, and the district staff. He coached and umpired for 33 years. He helped to organize a Little League field in Chewsville, Md., which is now where Valley Little League plays.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Reatha Lovell Kline; one daughter, Cathy Wynkoop and her husband, Douglas, of Smithsburg, Md.; one son, Robert Lee Kline II and his wife, Penny, of Hagerstown; one sister, Debra Sue King and her husband, Bill, of West Virginia; one brother, Richard A. Kline and his wife, Faith, of Hagerstown; five grandchildren, Tracey Malcolm and her husband, Deron, Kelly Wynkoop, Douglas Wynkoop and his wife, Tara, all of Smithsburg, Lindsay Kline, Wesley Kline and his fiancee, Lindsay Miller, all of Hagerstown; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Catherine Kline; one sister, Betty Lou Kline; and two brothers, William G. Kline and Daniel M. Kline.
Funeral services will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Funkstown, on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Michael K. Louia will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
Family will receive friends at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
