Man struck by pickup truck in supermarket parking lot has died

SMITHSBURG — A Smithsburg man who was struck by a pickup truck Sunday in the parking lot of the Food Lion supermarket on Jefferson Boulevard has died, Maryland State Police said Tuesday.

George Bargmann, 58, of Smithsburg, died Tuesday at Meritus Medical Center, Maryland State Police Cpl. P.A. Martin said.

The incident occurred at about 12:30 p.m., when Bargmann was struck by a Ford pickup as he was walking in the Food Lion parking lot at 22401 Jefferson Blvd., according to a state police news release.

Bargmann was unresponsive when police arrived at the scene. A trooper and an off-duty emergency room nurse performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Bargmann until fire and rescue personnel arrived.

Bargmann was listed in critical condition at the hospital on Sunday and Monday.

Terry Alan Nalley, 69, also of Smithsburg, was the driver of the truck, police said.

No charges had been filed in the case, and  the investigation is continuing, police said.
