Smithsburg man struck by pickup truck listed in critical condition

SMITHSBURG — A Smithsburg man who on Sunday was struck by a pickup truck in the parking lot of the Food Lion supermarket on Jefferson Boulevard remained in critical condition Tuesday morning at Meritus Medical Center east of Hagerstown, Maryland State Police Cpl. P.A. Martin said.

George Bargmann, 58, of Smithsburg, was struck at about 12:30 p.m. in the Food Lion parking lot at 22401 Jefferson Blvd., according to a news release from state police.

Troopers said Bargmann was unresponsive when they arrived. A trooper at the scene and an off-duty emergency room nurse performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Bargmann until fire and rescue personnel arrived.

Police said Terry Nalley, 69, of Smithsburg, was the driver of the pickup.

No charges had been filed as of Monday afternoon, State Police 1st Sgt. Kevin Lewis said.
