HAGERSTOWN — Vicky Bullett has built a career on being gritty.

The Martinsburg, W.Va., native has employed courage, honor and fortitude — among other attributes of determination — to make her mark in life.

Now, she is teaching what she has learned.

Bullett, the former University of Maryland and Olympic basketball star, will be the guest speaker for the annual True Grit Banquet at Fountain Head Country Club on May 8.

The True Grit Award is given to student-athletes who are not necessarily stars of their team, but have overcome some obstacle to remain a member of their team. Athletes from each of the public and private high schools in the county and a student from HCC are honored each year.

Bullett was recently named Hagerstown Community College’s head women’s basketball coach, replacing Marlys Palmer, who retired after 33 years.

Before accepting the job, Bullett had been a highly decorated basketball player, playing four years at Maryland before playing on two U.S. Olympic teams, two WNBA teams and professionally in Europe.

Her career has been highlighted by a Olympic gold in 1988 and bronze in 1992. She was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011. She is currently teaching in the Berkeley County school system.

The banquet’s social hour begins at 6 p.m. and the program begins at 6:30.

Tickets for the event are $25 and are available at the Hagerstown YMCA front desk.

The banquet is co-sponsored by the Washington County Board of Education, The Herald-Mail Co., the YMCA and several area businesses that provide $500 scholarships to the winner from each school.

For more information, call the YMCA at 301-739-3990.
