Mr. John F. Poffenberger, 79, of 11800 Orchard Lane, Waynesboro, died at 10:22 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown, Md. He had been critically ill for the past three weeks. 

Born Sept. 17, 1932, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late John R. and Lavinia (Jackson) Poffenberger.  He lived his early life in the Hagerstown area. 

He was a member of the Hagerstown High School and Williamsport High School, Class of 1951. 

Mr. Poffenberger served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from January 1952 to December 1955. During that time, he served aboard the USS Oriskany CV 34 and the USS Thornback 418. 

He and his first wife, the late Leona (Keyser) Poffenberger, were married Sept. 17, 1957. She died in 1976. He married his second wife, Carolyn (Dile) Poffenberger, on June 16, 1977, in Mont Alto, Pa.  They moved to their present residence in 1998 and enjoyed spending part of their time for many years in Vero Beach, Fla. 

Mr. Poffenberger was a farmer in the Barnes Road area of Boonsboro, Md., for many years. He worked at General Elevator Co. in Hagerstown as an elevator mechanic, branch manager and field supervisor, from September 1960 until his retirement in 1992.

He was a member of Waynesboro Church of the Brethren, Antietam Lodge 197 F &AM, Keedysville, Md.; Tall Cedars of Lebanon Forest 95, Hagerstown; Consistory; Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, Waynesboro; Washington County AmVets; Waynesboro Fish and Game; Tri-State Base United States Submarine Veterans; and the McDonald’s Coffee Club in Waynesboro. 

He enjoyed woodworking, especially making furniture for the Waynesboro Cancer Auction every year. He also enjoyed deer hunting and playing golf. 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by five stepchildren, Terry L. Liggett and his wife, Kay, of Hamilton, Ohio, Karl Feldmeyer and his family of Funkstown, Md., Kris Feldmeyer and his family of South Mountain, Pa., Kara Joseph and her family of Warrenton, Va., and Kurt Feldmeyer and his family of Chester Gap, Va.; eight stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; one brother, William Poffenberger and his wife, Linda, of Vero Beach; and three nieces. 

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 28, 2012, at Waynesboro Church of the Brethren, 117 S. Church St., Waynesboro, with Pastor Amy Messler officiating. A Masonic funeral and a service by the Sub Vets will be held just prior to the religious service at 1 p.m. at the church. Burial will be private in Mont Alto Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the honor guard of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599, Chambersburg. 

The family will receive friends following the services Saturday afternoon at the church. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Waynesboro Church of the Brethren, 117 S. Church St., Waynesboro, PA 17268; or the American Cancer Society, 384 Floral Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201.
