Pedestrian seriously hurt after being hit by truck near Smithsburg

SMITHSBURG — A Smithsburg man was taken to Meritus Medical Center with serious injuries Sunday afternoon after he was struck by a pickup truck in the Food Lion parking lot off Jefferson Boulevard west of Smithsburg, according to a news release from the Maryland State Police.

George Barmann, 58, of Smithsburg, was walking in the parking lot at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday when he was struck by a pickup truck, state police said.

An off-duty state police trooper, Trooper 1st Class James Bowers, and an off-duty emergency room nurse tended to Barmann, including performing CPR until fire and rescue personnel arrived, state police said.

The pickup’s driver was Terry Nalley, 69, of Smithsburg, state police said.

The incident was reported to 911 at 12:26 p.m. Sunday, according to Washington County Emergency Services.

The incident was under investigation.
