Elbert Quentin Grossnickle, 93, departed this life Thursday, April 19, 2012, peacefully at his home.

Quentin was born Feb. 19,1919, on the family farm near Wolfsville, Md., the son of the late Charles Elbert and Sallie Edna Leatherman Grossnickle.

He was married to Pauline Ardella Kline, daughter of the late Austin L. and Mary Winfield Kline, on Aug. 8, 1940. Pauline preceded him in death Jan. 26, 2002.

Quentin quit school in the seventh grade and worked on the family farm. He worked hard, logging, plowing and planting with horses, and milking cows by hand. The family farm also grew and sold crops to canning factories, and many young people were hired to work alongside him to bring in the crops.

He and Pauline continued farming, and, in 1953, he began selling insurance with his father and brother, and built his insurance business, E. Quentin Grossnickle and Sons Insurance Agency, which is still operated by his children.

He was a member of Grossnickle Church of the Brethren, where he served in many capacities, including Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent and chairman of the cemetery board for many years. He also served on the ministry and finance board, and was a lifetime deacon of the church.

Quentin was an election board official of the Republican Party at the Catoctin District for many years.

He was the senior vice president of Myersville Savings Bank for 12 years, and was on the board of directors of the bank for 18 years.

He is survived by three daughters, Faye Miller and husband, Francis, Lana Stottlemyer and husband, Elwood, and Martha Harshman and husband, Alan; three sons, Charles A. Grossnickle and wife, Vicky, Quentin David Grossnickle and wife, Joan, and Timothy E. Grossnickle and wife, Joyce. He is also survived by grandchildren, Tony Miller, Tina Perine, Tanya Miller, Brian Grossnickle, Andy Stottlemyer, Amy Flook, Jami Marker, David Grossnickle, Peter Grossnickle, Joshua Grossnickle and Ryan Harshman; great-grandchildren, Chad Perine, Adam and Daniel Miller, Abby and Jenna Grossnickle, Shepherd and Natalie Marker, Clayton and Aidan Marker, and Jamison and Jacob Grossnickle; two great-great-grandchildren, Colton and Cory Perine; sisters-in-law, Annabelle Moser, Eleanor Kline, Juanita Kline and Doris Poole; brother-in-law, Carroll Moser; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Preceding Quentin in death was his infant sister, Estelle; granddaughter, Shelli Grossnickle; brothers, Robert T. Grossnickle and C. Basil Grossnickle; brothers-in-law, Thomas Kline, Glenn Kline and Austin Kline Jr.; and sisters-in-law, Eleanor Grossnickle and Delores Grossnickle.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, April 23, 2012, at Grossnickle Church of the Brethren, Myersville, Md., with Pastors Donna and Tim Ritchey Martin officiating.

Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Ricketts Funeral Home, 504 Main St., Myersville, from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 22, 2012. The funeral home will be open Sunday beginning at noon.
